We utilize the best of Traditional East Asian medicine: gentle Japanese meridian therapy-style acupuncture, custom Chinese herbal formulations, movement therapies (qigong, sotai, and yoga), massage, dietary strategies, and more. Pictured above, small tools made of silver and copper are used to tap, press, and massage acupuncture points.

Unlike Chinese-style acupuncture, where a strong needle sensation is considered therapeutic, Japanese-style can be so gentle it is said you should be able to needle a sleeping cat. Needles are smaller and insertions are more shallow, sometimes only the surface of the skin is stimulated. Fewer points may also be selected, as elegant simplicity is highly valued.
Custom herbal formulations are an integral part of traditional East Asian medicine. Medicinal substances-be they plants, minerals, or animal products-are given in recipe-like combinations, know as formulas. Many of the basic formulas still employed today have been in use for thousands of years. Traditional formulas are often further customized to the individual, by adjusting dosage and ingredients. Individual ingredients are chosen to enhance each other's therapeutic properties, while reducing the potential risk of side effects.
This ancient Chinese saying may sound like something from a fortune cookie, but there is no denying that movement is integral to health. This is why our acupuncture treatments often include assisted therapeutic movement. Pictured above, sotai is a Japanese movement system that emphasizes awareness and breathing, moving in the direction of ease and away from pain. We also incorporate exercises adapted from qigong (a health-cultivation martial arts practice from China) and the Iyengar yoga tradition.
While we treat a wide range of patients and conditions, the core of our practice is women's health-be it teens with painful periods, help getting pregnant, care during pregnancy or postpartum, or relief of menopausal symptoms. We provide fertility care for folks of all genders and family arrangements, trying to get pregnant with or without additional medical assistance.

Sarah and her practice are a gift! At the recommendation of a midwife, I started going to her for acupuncture shortly before trying to conceive and saw her regularly up until the day before I went into labor (10 days past my due date, thanks in part to Sarah's master skills for helping my body move things along naturally). Sarah is incredibly knowledgeable and was able to offer valuable holistic guidance and resources throughout my pregnancy that aligned with my preferences and needs.
She is reasonable and thoughtful in her approach and listens closely to offer her patients services and relevant information that is comfortable and helpful for them. Her office is a calm, beautiful space and I always left feeling better. I can't recommend this practice enough and have already sent others to see her.

I can't say enough about Sarah. Before my pregnancy (and subsequent home birth of my son), I had no prior experience with acupuncture or Chinese herbs. I went to Sarah initially for some pregnancy related back pain, and I ended up forming a relationship with her that I am confident is responsible for my happy, healthy, and glorious pregnancy and home birth.
Her office is calming and gorgeous, her demeanor caring and attentive, and her knowledge and treatment second to none. Not only did she help with the back pain, but she walked with me through my second and third trimester monitoring aches and pains and slowly, but most surely, preparing my body for natural child birth. Postpartum, she helped restore the nutrients and energy to my body, helping me heal both mentally and physically. I would return to her in a heartbeat, and I continue to be grateful to this day.

Sarah Rivkin gave me health advise about how to balance for healthier and less stressed filled life. She recommended qigong and brought me to a class. She also gave me sound dietary advise. I was eating mostly raw food and she talked to me about my seasonal needs from Chinese medicine practice. Finally she suggested that I consider environmental changes to give me the best situation possible. I trust, admire and like her.

I've been seeing Sarah for years. Most notably, she helped me to be cured of asthma and allergies using Chinese herbs and acupuncture. She's got a special gift for herbal medicine. I've seen her during pregnancies for morning sickness and for injuries and depression. I find her treatment to be far superior to a RX from a western physician. Sarah is always a wonderful listener, a caring and calm presence and a true partner in health. I send friends and family to her all the time. She has my highest recommendation.
