As Rumi beautifully expressed, there is a tiny spark of the divine within each of us. This divine spark is filled with light, wisdom and willpower and guides us in fulfilling our true life potential. The practice of yoga cultivates presence to this essential aspect of ourself. Upstate Yoga Institute was founded in 1983 by Mrs. Mary-Louise Skelton.
Mrs Skelton studied yoga in India in the 1960's with Yoga Master Sri Krishnamacharya. She later became a student of his son, T.K.V. Desikachar, and founded Upstate Yoga Institute at his urging.

Upstate Yoga is truly unique and truly wonderful! I have been to many yoga studios (central New York, Manhattan, the midwest.) and never found a place so deeply rooted in knowledge (of yoga postures, breathing, yoga philosophy, meditation, chanting - the whole yoga experience), and also so compassionate toward their students. The teachers are all extremely well-trained, and they try to give their students the most beneficial yoga experience possible - every time.
The facility is beautiful - filled with plants and light and a calm, peaceful energy. There is no pressure to look or dress a certain way - it is a "come as you are, " very accepting environment. Every time I go to class here, I leave feeling better - physically and usually emotionally as well. I moved to Syracuse four years ago and feel so fortunate to have found my yoga home.
