Arthur Makaris was in the right place at the right time. Shortly after President Nixon formalized relations with the People's Republic of China in 1972, Dr. Tin Yau So came from Hong Kong to teach acupuncture to Americans. At the time, Arthur was studying traditional kung fu from Sifu Pui Chan -- who happened to come from a neighboring village to Dr. So, back in Guanzghou.
Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is a broad title that refers to various medical practices developed in ancient China and continually evolving today. These practices include a variety of medicinal techniques, most prominently acupuncture and herbal medicine. Acupuncture is the insertion of hair-thin needles into the body at specific locations called acupuncture points. The human body has over 2,000 acupuncture points, linked by meridians (pathways) that facilitate qi (life force, pronounced chee).
