In 1989, Sylla Sheppard-Hanger began the Atlantic Institute of Aromatherapy to further the quality of aromatherapy education and training. Since then, she's become recognized as one of the pillars of our field, cultivating a rich intellectual legacy. Over the past few years, her daughter, Nyssa Hanger, has come on board to continue the Atlantic Institute's mission.
Your interpretation was correct; at this time, there is no true certification for aromatherapy, aside from becoming a Registered Aromatherapist (RA) by taking the ARC Exam. As to whether or not you can practice, it depends on what you mean. If you want to administer aromatherapy treatments, you need a license to touch from your state.

The course itself is comprehensive & more than meets the needs of individuals who not only want to learn about the world of aromatherapy, but also who care about the science, the ethics, and the responsibility of educating others about essential oils. Students help one another as they are introduced to sometimes unfamiliar chemistry (as a retired English teacher, I took all the help I could get) but we were challenged also to make connections in the real world and differentiate between fact and conjecture. I love this learning community-it continues long after you finish the course!
